Why can't we get rid of it

2:39 PM

Why is it so hard to get rid of old items? I use to watch shows like Clean House, and think to myself, "these people are crazy and nasty". How can anyone get on television knowing you live in a nasty, messy home? Then after listening to some sad story about how the loss of a loved one has caused the family to cling and harbor so much stuff that they can not walk through their home, I begin to, very slightly, sympathize (not much, just a teeny tiny little bit).

Don't blame your nasty on anyone but yourself, right? Well, in my judgement, I began to notice how my dining room table never stays clear of paper, books, puzzle pieces, pamphlets from events that have passed. My closet is spewing over with shoes, bags, clothes, and hangers. Oh my goodness, my basement! Children's toys that my daughter will never pick up again, old computers that will never work again, and boxes of junk that I claim I will someday use again (not!). Parking in my garage is fine, but opening the door is not so easy.

Should I blame the people that have blessed me with so many things? Should I blame the lack of time I have have in a day? Perhaps, I am lazy? None of the above. It is extremely hard to part with things that we hold dear to our heart and memories, no matter how big or small, but how can we expect God to tremendously bless us with new things as long as we hold onto old, useless items. When God fed the children of Israel in the wilderness, He instructed them to take only what they could eat, nothing extra (Exodus 16:4). Naturally, some disobeyed and took extra. Those that did, the food spoiled, rotted, and filled with maggots. Why? Because God will always give you enough. He will always supply what you need, when you need it, day by day. He will not allow you to lack.

I recall a time when I helped a friend clean and reorganize her pantry of canned goods. The pantry was very well stocked with veggies, fruit, jams, and peanut butter. My methodology was to line the goods according to their shelf date, newer to the back and older toward the front. I picked up a can good that was nearly seven years old, then I picked up another one even older than that.Whoa! The bottom of the cans were rusted from sitting on the shelf for too long. Every outdated canned good, I put to the side to be trashed. When my friend saw that, she almost bit my head off. She didn't want to throw the ridiculously, rust infested, outdated items away, in fear she may need them, but she had so many dangerously outdated cans that it wasn't any room in the pantry for new food. Ultimately, by keeping the old, she was blocking out the new.

Don't store up for yourself treasures on this earth, where rust and moth destroy (Matthew 6:19). Get rid of the old so God can open up the windows of heaven and bless! Do not be fearful, God will replace whatever is lost, taken, or given away. He will replace the old, and He will replace with even greater!
